Understanding and Managing Diabetes: Tips for Better Living
Home > Blog
Diabetes is a disease that occurs when the glucose (sugar) in your blood is too high. ⠀
Your body always has some sugar in it to provide energy to all your cells and organs including your muscles, brain, heart, and liver.
Sugar comes from the food you eat everyday. Blood needs the help of insulin to carry sugar to different cells in your body. That’s why, as soon as you eat, insulin gets released into the blood. Insulin then helps glucose get into cells.
So what is insulin?
Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach.⠀
Tips: Insulin is like a key that opens the door to your cells and allows the sugar to enter into them. Once glucose enters the cells, your body uses it as energy.⠀
So remember, if you don’t have enough insulin (type1) or have a defect in insulin use (type 2), glucose cannot get transported to your cells.
Glucose stays in the bloodstream and causes high blood sugar. If your body has high sugar for a long time, it can damage many organs in the body including the heart, nerves, eyes, and kidneys.⠀
Living with Diabetes: Overcoming Daily Challenges
Diabetes is a disease that does not take a day off.
It can be challenging and emotionally exhausting to constantly have to chase your blood sugar numbers.⠀
Every day you have to focus on making sure to take medications on time, figure out the right kind of food to eat, and be sure to get enough exercise.⠀
It can put a tremendous burden on your everyday life due to the demanding nature of this disease.⠀
