The Four Key Strategies To Help You Maximize Your Weight Loss Using Semaglutide (Ozempic®) Or Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®)

Semaglutide (Ozempic®) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) medications make it easier to lose weight and stick to healthy eating habits. These medications when used in combination with other lifestyle changes support metabolic health so you can regain your healthy body weight. In addition to taking Semaglutide or Tirzepatide, modifications to what you eat, how you exercise, your sleep routine, and your emotional health can improve your overall health and help maintain weight loss.

Quality Food

Eating more mindfully and making healthier choices including food with high fiber, protein, and healthy fats (including unsalted nuts, avocado, lean meat like chicken, turkey, fish) —without restricting or counting calories helps maintain or lose weight. These small and sustainable changes to your meal plan will not only improve insulin resistance, they will also improve your gut and overall health.

Patients we work with have also reported less side effects when they consume healthier foods, minimize or avoid intake of red meat, greasy and fatty food and most importantly, apply portion control.

Some patients that we have worked with in the past shared with us that they had been eating significantly larger portions of their meals prior to taking the weight loss injections semaglutide or tirzepatide and thought they needed to continue eating the same amount of food to fuel their body, even though the medication suppressed their hunger and they felt fuller for a significantly longer period of time.

One patient in particular mentioned that she was over eating to the point that she was feeling nauseous and started throwing up. In addition, she was not hydrating enough with water.

Thankfully she was not too dehydrated and recovered shortly after we provided her appropriate interventions. We let her know that she had been overeating and that is what caused the severe side effects of nausea and vomiting.

We always make sure that our patient’s have a reasonable meal plan and how to have the confidence in the quantity and quality of food they are receiving . We make sure that they have good mix of nutrients which offers quality food with high protein, vegetables and water while still being able to reach their weight loss goals.

Good Sleep At Night

Getting quality sleep is crucial to our brain, metabolic, cardiovascular health, and overall longevity. This is something my patients don’t prioritize and don’t find enough time to get a good night’s sleep as the American lifestyle is very busy. A recent study from 2018 found a strong correlation between irregular sleep times and an increased risk of cardiovascular health.

Developing a schedule helps improve sleep quality and minimize cardiometabolic health factors. It is recommended to get 7-9 nightly hours of restful sleep to be able to maintain optimal health and manage weight.

Regular Exercise

It is no secret that regular exercise can have a ripple effect on your overall health. Multiple studies show that exercise can improve your heart health, bone health, reduce your risk of cancer and risk of type 2 diabetes, improve your mental health, and help manage weight. Prioritizing 60 minutes of cardio five days a week plus two sessions of strength training each week, improves your heart health, cholesterol, blood sugar, sleep apnea, improves insulin sensitivity, and reduces joint or back pain.

Some of my patients on Semaglutide (Ozempic®) and Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) injections worry that they may not have energy to exercise or work out if their appetite is suppressed as they have significantly reduced their daily calorie intake.

As long as your diet consists of high protein food and you are drinking water to hydrate, your body has enough reserved calories to fuel your exercise routine. You can always eat a protein bar and fruit before strenuous exercise and eat food high in protein or your regular meal after exercise.

If you are experiencing fatigue, leading to difficulty exercising, we can look at your vitamin levels and decide if a multivitamin or other vitamints might be right to supplement some of the nutrients you get from food. This could give you the energy to finish your work outs.

Emotional Health

Stress levels can influence hormones that affect your eating habits, metabolism, and weight. Incorporating evidenced based research including yoga and meditation can reduce stress and recognize emotional triggers that can improve heart health.

Another tactic I have seen patients use to improve emotional health while taking Semaglutide (Ozempic®) or Tirzepatide (Mounjaro®) is to share their success with friends or family. Talking about challenges with trusted allies helps lower stress levels considerably.

The support network effect is even stronger as the patients share with each other their experiences, including any tips or tricks they have found individually to reach their weight loss goals. Patients are also more likely to hold themselves accountable if they have a trusted friend that they feel they are obligated to share their progress with.

If you are considering weight loss treatment, we have a Friends and Family Referral Program where each participant receives a discount off of the cost of their weight loss treatment. Make sure to ask about our referral program during the complementary consultation.
